An epidural steroid injection is a procedure that targets spine and lower extremity pain by injecting a steroid medication into the epidural space. To insure proper placement of the medication, the procedure is done under fluoroscopy or x-ray. An epidural steroid injection is an excellent treatment for patients with spine and lower extremity pain. This type of pain is usually due to an inflammation of the disc and/or nerves. By placing a steroid medication into the epidural space, inflammation of the nerve root can be reduced. Before your scheduled visit/procedureAt your initial office visit, please bring your insurance card with you, Also, anytime your insurance has changed bring in a copy of your new card at your next visit. Be sure that you provide us with the proper forms and numbers. Our insurance department will file your claims and assist you in obtaining reimbursement.
How is it performed?
First, an IV is started and you may be given medicine for relaxation. Next, while lying on an x-ray table, your skin will be cleansed and prepared. Then, an epidural needle is inserted into the epidural space of the spine (the space outside of the covering of the spinal cord) while an anesthetic and steroid medication is slowly injected into the area. After CareYou may be observed for a longer period according to fraility and other medical conditions. Vitals will be measured where necessary. Leg strength and walking ability will be assessed prior to discharge. You may resume normal daily activity the following day. Please call us if you continue to have pain or notice swelling, redness, fever or experience a new onset of weaknesss. |
