Lumbar Discography
Facet Nerve
What is it about?

As a diagnostic procedure, its usefulness is almost unmatched. It allows your docotrs to correlate your pain to abnormal anatomy. No other diagnostic test does this reliably, not even MRI. This has been shown by many studies in the medical literature.

Lumbar discography is considered for patients who, despite extensive conservative treatment, have disabling low back pain, groin pain, hip pain, and/or leg pain.

A Discogram is usually done if you are considering surgical intervention to relieve your pain. This test helps the surgeon determine if a fusion is needed, and at what level if needed.

Before your scheduled visit/procedure
  • If you are taking any anticoagulant (blood thinner) medication like Coumadin, Plavix or Ticlid, please inform the physician or nurse before scheduling the procedure
  • You may not eat 4 hours before the procedure
  • You are not permitted to drive after the procedure and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please contact the IPMS staff if you need help.
  • Please call the pan management service if you are running a fever, flu, have a cold or any infection.
How is it performed?

You will lie prone or on your isde under the fluoroscopy machine. After your back is anesthetized, the needles will be inserted in your discs. After the needle placement, injecting a small amount of contrast dye under fluoroscopic guidance pressurizes the disc. If the disc is abnormal, pain provocation may be noted and it may reproduce the quality and location of the pain. This procedure can take upto an hour.

After Care

You will be moved to the recovery area where your vitals are monitored. Plan to rest and drink plenty of fluids for that dat. Ice packs may be applied to your back for 15 minutes at a time to help relieve discomfort.
